Community connections

Day of Caring®

Hundreds of United Way supporters from across Toronto participated in the 2011 Day of Caring® in May. Watch the slide show above or see photos on Flickr.

Volunteers make a difference

For the 500 participants, this year’s Day of Caring® was an opportunity to bring neighbours together, by creating safe, clean, and accessible community space.

Read about the 1,500 hours of volunteer time generated by over 500 volunteers completing 70 projects across the city.

United Way Toronto’s Community Connections program provides customized employee volunteer opportunities that connect volunteers’ talents and skills to needs of United Way membership agencies in the community—to make an impact where it’s needed most. Here are some of the highly rewarding volunteering opportunities that will benefit your workplace, employee volunteers and our communities.

Day of Caring®

Day of Caring® opportunities give your organization’s employees hands-on experience supporting a membership agency. United Way Toronto will work with your organization to tailor a volunteer team opportunity that connects employees’ interests to the community through:

  • Long-term volunteer opportunities (e.g. mentoring, after-school programs, etc.)
  • Organization/team volunteer days in support of specific service areas (e.g. youth opportunities, homelessness prevention, seniors support, etc.)
  • Product drives in support of a membership agency (e.g. collecting school supplies, clothing, food, etc.)

Matching your professional skills with our membership agencies

Use your professional skills to help one of United Way Toronto’s more than 200 health and social service agencies deliver vital community services. United Way Toronto will match your expertise and interests to our agencies’ needs in a number of areas including:

  • Human resources: Provide advice on a number of topics such as employment practices, labour management and conflict resolution
  • Information technology: Provide problem solving support, software updates/training, technology audits, and website development
  • Finance and law: Provide financial planning, budgeting and auditing knowledge
  • Marketing: Help create professional agency marketing materials

Sharing workplace experiences and resources

By allowing individuals or groups from membership agencies to experience your workplace, you can help others in areas such as employment training or job searching. You can provide support by:

  • Inviting an individual to job shadow you for up to one week at your workplace
  • Hosting a workplace orientation session and group tour
  • Conducting practise interviews for individuals seeking employment
  • Providing occasional access to meeting spaces at your organization for a membership agency’s use
  • Sharing knowledge of your profession, field or sector to clients of membership agencies
