A social investment that pays dividends

Duncan MacDonald is a Leadership level donor, has served on Campaign Cabinets and volunteers his time in our community.

MacDonald says, "United Way isn't a charity. It's a social investment. Not everyone in our society has access to employment opportunities, health care and strong futures. United Way really is a good approach to the social problems we all face — both in the short — and long-term. That's why the labour movement, through the labour council, was a founding member of United Way and continues to be supportive."

MacDonald also knows the Building Strong Neighbourhoods strategy, in particular the Community Hubs initiative, is the right foundation. "These are a local response to local issues. They are in the community. They broaden the reach and build awareness in the neighbourhoods," MacDonald explains. "The hubs are a positive development that can make great strides in a community's health and growth."

In his work with United Way, he often works closely with business leaders. "Differences in opinion are not unusual. United Way provides a common ground for discussions of issues from an array of perspectives," MacDonald says.

He concludes, "Having seen the impact United Way has in our community, our society is a better place for doing this. It's a comfort to know United Way is there."
