Lauren Cappell — making a real difference in her local community through United Way's GenNext.

Lauren Cappell, an associate at Goodmans LLP, doesn't hesitate when asked why she gives to United Way. "I think that sometimes people overlook the need we have right here in Toronto. Many of my friends have made extraordinary contributions in the field of international development, which is truly admirable. It would be great to see more people making similar contributions and commitments at home in Toronto, where they can assist their local communities," she says. "We can make a real difference here."

As a Leadership donor and an active member of United Way's GenNext®, Cappell is surrounded by other like-minded young people who share her desire to make a difference in their community. GenNext was established to encourage individuals in their 20s and 30s to connect with their community in meaningful ways that reflect their own unique interests. This initiative gives people like Cappell the opportunity to do more than just sign a cheque. She is part of a broad movement of GenNexters right across the country, who care deeply about the cities they call home.

A keen observer and engaged member of her community, Cappell is clear about her hope for the city's future: "I hope Toronto makes better use of its resources," she says. She's particularly focused on ensuring Toronto provides its youth and its many newcomers with the right opportunities. "I want girls to have better access to sport and recreation. Being involved and part of a team is key to the development of confidence and leadership skills, among other things. I also want the talent and skills newcomers bring to the city to be recognized and utilized. Too many people are being left behind."

She's also clear that she believes United Way is the type of organization that can achieve this vision. "United Way has the power to help people turn their lives around."
